Creating Matrix Items

Once you have created a matrix definition, you are ready to add matrix items to your inventory.

To create new matrix items:

1.Create a new item, just as you would any other item in receiving, on a purchase order or directly in the inventory.

2.When entering the Stock Number type in the Base Stock Number you want to use for these items (e.g., LVI-SHIRT).

3.On the bottom of the General tab select a Matrix Definition that you want use for this item.

4.Once the Matrix Definition has been assigned to this item, press the Quantity tab.  You will see that there will be a place to enter a quantity for each matrix dimension.

5.Fill in all other required item information and press the Save button.

6.When prompted choose either to add the matrix information (sizes, colors, etc.) to the item descriptions.

If you create this item in Inventory, RetailEdge will create an item for all matrix dimension.  If you create this item in receiving or a purchase order, only items for the items being received or ordered will be created in your inventory.  In the example above using the Stock Number LVI-SHIRT and a collar/sleeve length matrix, RetailEdge create matrix items LVI-SHIRT~15~30, LVI-SHIRT~16~30, LVI-SHIRT~16.5~30 and a Matrix Parent item of LVI-SHIRT in your inventory.

RetailEdge creates individual items for matrix items for two main reasons:

1.It speeds things up at the time of sale because the clerks do not have to select any options for size or color at the time of sale.

2.It allows you to associate unique information about each matrix item with the specific item (i.e., pictures, special ordering information, etc.)

You should TAKE YOUR TIME when you create matrices and matrix items and make sure that all of the information is correct and as complete as possible.  If you miss one piece of information or want to change something later, you may have to change a number of different items not just one.

Once you have set up your matrices, and created the items for the first time, the process will go faster.  You will then be able to click on an Matrix Parent in your inventory, press the Quantity tab and quickly see where you need to fill in your size runs.  You will also be able to more quickly receive and create purchase orders with sized items.

Note: You should create the Matrix definition before you create the items that use the matrix definition.
