I'd like to ask again to bring back the ability to set negative prices for coupons.

This is the way Retail Edge used to work. It made it so much better for taking coupons!

Please, please bring back the ability to set a negative price for a coupon.

This allows us to simply scan in a coupon at the point of sale and have it deduct it from the sales price. As it is now, we have to manually futz around to take coupons (we scan them and then make them a return with a negative quantity) and it really slows down the sales process and leads to mistakes.

Also, while I'm on the topic, please consider changing the way discounts are displayed on receipts. We would like to see a separate line item when giving a percentage discount. Rather than adjusting the price for every item, we'd like the receipt to show the regular prices for all items, then add a discount line and subtract the discount from the sales total.

Just about every single customer that has received a discount has had questions about our receipts because it doesn't show the dollar amount of the discount.

Can you tell me what how you were getting a negative price in 7.5? I can't recreate what you are describing. If is was in 7.5 then we want to be able to bring this functionality into 8.0. We try not to lose functionality in upgrades unless there is a really compelling reason to do so.

Currently, RetailEdge deals with coupon discounting through the discount procedure. So if you press the discount button or the F6 key and choose the coupon discount and then type in the amount of the coupon, RetailEdge will apply the coupon, amount to all items currently on the sales screen.

If you are interested in displaying the total discount amount on a receipt, you should:

1. Choose Workstations from the Tools|Settings menu
2. Edit/Modify your current workstation
3. Press the Receipt Options tab
4. Press the Advanced Receipt Options button.
5. Select the Include "You Saved" Section checkbox.
6. Select the Discount As Amount (vs. Percent) checkbox.
7. Press the Ok button
8. Press the Save button on the Workstation Editor.

This will then display the total dollar amount of any discounts on the bottom of your receipts in addition to discounts on a line item basis.


It is a good suggestion to have a coupon stock type that automatically goes onto the sales screen with a negative, just in case someone wants to scan in coupon code.

I have looked into this one a little bit more. No one here can remember a change that prevented anyone from creating a negative price. However, I did notice that you could not manually create an item with a negative price. I did find a work around though.

If you create an item in inventory and and place the cursor in one of the price fields, you will see a down arrow displayed next to the field. Pressing this down arrow will display a calculator. Enter the price you want for the item and then press the +/- button on the displayed calculator. Then click back into the price field. You will then have a negative number for a price.

Then when you sell this item by scanning a barcode for the coupon, you will get a quantity of 1 and a negative price.

Be careful with this workaround and try it with a few items to see how it works on your closing reports and export to Quickbooks. A quick test on my system showed it to be Ok, you might find some situation where the numbers don't work correctly or look strange. For instance if I only sell a coupon and nothing else your closing report margins will look strange (e.g., Margin = 1 -C/R => 1 - (x/(-y) which will give you a margin greater than 1).

FYI you can also get a similar negative number on the sales screen by clicking into the price field and pressing the +/- button on the displayed calculator.

I think the change was simply making it impossible to use the minus key to enter negative prices. It used to be you could use the minus key to make prices and costs go negative. Not any more.

If you create an item in inventory and and place the cursor in one of the price fields, you will see a down arrow displayed next to the field. Pressing this down arrow will display a calculator. Enter the price you want for the item and then press the +/- button on the displayed calculator. Then click back into the price field. You will then have a negative number for a price.

Be careful with this workaround and try it with a few items to see how it works on your closing reports and export to Quickbooks. A quick test on my system showed it to be Ok, you might find some situation where the numbers don't work correctly or look strange. For instance if you only sell a coupon and nothing else your closing report margins will look strange (e.g., Margin = 1 -C/R => 1 - (x/(-y) which will give you a margin greater than 1).

If I could find a way to set my cost negative, then I could account for my margin.

I think what I want to do with coupons is set my cost to be the same price as the coupon (e.g., -$1 and -$1). We get reimbursed when we mail in our coupons, which is like buying an item at a negative cost. In the end, coupons are a zero margin transaction.
