Problem: I was scanning a random weight item in the sales window but no item is found. The bar code printed out from the weight machine is "220001500662" where "20001" is the item number and "0066" is the price. I set up the stock number for the item according to the instructions in the manual. In this case, the stock number is set up as "2200015". The bar code scanner is correctly scanning the 12-digit UPC code into the "Find item" text box. "Find By" is set to "Stock Number" but the item didn't show up. What else should I look for to get it to work ?

In your example the code you are sending to RetailEdge is 220001500662 or a UPC. You should do the following:

1. Scan the barcode into Notepad. Make sure that the full 12 digits of the code is being transmitted by the POS scanner. Some scanners strip check digits and starting codes.

2. Based on the code have shown and provided that everything is being transmitted in step 1 and the information below

Scale Barcode: 220001500662
Stock Number, UPC1 or UPC2: 220001.
Price: $00.62
Center Check Digit is 5
Final Check Digit is 2.

Note: The code that would be programmed into the SCALE for the above example would be 20001. So in the simplest case, you would enter your items into your scale with 5 digit identifiers.

You could enter an item into the scale like 1. However, since the barcode generated from the scale will automatically create leading zeros to make the barcode 12 characters, the SKU, UPC1 or UPC2 that would have to be put into RetailEdge would be 220001. It might be easier for consistency to provide 5 digit IDs for the scale, but it is up to you.

Based on this code, what RetailEdge would do is scan in an item with a UPC1, UPC2 or Stock Number of 220001500662. It would first find the item that had a Stock Number or UPC1 or UPC2 of 220001. Then would take the price of $0.66 and use the item's price as a unit price/weight to back-calculate the weight. So if this item was in your inventory at $0.33, RetailEdge would put a quantity of 2 on the Sales Screen.


RetailEdge handles the random weight barcodes the following way.

RetailEdge can properly interpret random weight UPC or EAN barcodes. These are codes that are typically marked on items weighed at the store (i.e., deli items, butcher items, etc.).

To enter random weight item in RetailEdge:

1. Fill out all the required inventory information.

2. Use the Inventory item's Stock Number, UPC1 or UPC2 field to designate the item value from the scale. The number entered into the RetailEdge field should be a 5 digit item number from the scale prefaced by the number 2 (i.e., 2XXXXX).

Random weight codes generated from the scale should have the following format:

UPC : 2XXXXXAPPPPC
XXXXX is the scale's item number
A is a center check digit and can be any number
PPPP is the item's price where the first two digits are the value price value before the decimal place and the second two digits are the value after the decimal place.
C is the barcodes check digit.

Stock Number, UPC1 or UPC2: 212345
Price: 19.95

EAN: 20XXXXXPPPPPC

XXXXX is the scale's item number
PPPPP is the item's price where the first three digits are the value price value before the decimal place and the second two digits are the value after the decimal place.
C is the barcodes check digit.

Note: If the EAN barcode prints a leading 0 and is in the format 02XXXXXPPPPPC, then simply place a 0 in front of the RetailEdge identifier (02XXXXX) and make it a 7 digit identifier.

Note: Barcode scanners should be setup to transmit the full 12 digits of the UPC including the final check digit and 13 digits of an EAN. RetailEdge will not properly identify a random weight items if less than 12 digits of the UPC or 13 digits of the EAN are transmitted.

It looks like the scanner is transmitting the full 12 digits UPC code. I can see it on Notepad and also on the Find Item textbox on the Sales screen. I have attached the screenshots of the Sales screen below when I scan in the UPC code.

Looking at the inventory screenshot, is the stock number entered correctly ? I have tried both "20001" and "220001" but I still can't get the item to show up ? Besides setting up the stock number, do I need to set up the Check digit and Final Check digit anywhere in Retailedge ?

The Number in RetailEdge needs to have the leading 2 in front of the stock number, UPC1 or UPC2. I have amended the information in the above post.

However in your example above of a Stock Number of 220001 should have worked. If you are finding the information above does not work let us know.

I gave it a try again and it is still not working. The stock number was correctly set to "220001" but Retailedge still don't recognize the item. The price of the item is $1.99/lb. The price on the sticker is $0.66. I think I have set everything correctly according to the instructions. If I'm not mistaken, all I need is to make sure
1. the scanner is returning the full 12-digits UPC code.
2. set the stock number to "220001"

Is there anything else I should check for ? If not, what other ways can I take to resolve this ?
I'm thinking of calling the Tech Support but would like to give this another try.

In your example the RetailEdge Stock Number should be 220001 and not 2200015. The 5 is an intermediate check digit and should not be included in the Stock Number for the item.
