Here's the scenario:
Customer comes to the counter with 3 pre-packaged vegetable of the same item number. The 1st scan in the Sales screen is all good and dandy. However, any subsequent scan will replace the previously scanned item. I know there is a checkbox called "Consolidate" on the sales screen which will scan the 2nd and 3rd item on another line if it is turned off. However, this is cumbersome to use as we have to be mindful of what we are scanning and turn the checkbox on or off. On a busy day, this really slows down the checkout counter. Is there a feature on the inventory setup that will mark the item whether to be consolidated or not ?

The only way to do what you are trying to do is to uncheck the consolidate items box on the sales screen. RetailEdge will remember this setting next time you open the sales screen. So you will not have to check it on and off. Just keep it turned off.

The consolidate items check box is there for users who want to have receipts group similar items that are not scanned together. This can make it easier for the customer to read the total quantity of an item being purchased and will produce a shorter receipt.

However a variable weight scanned item is essentially one item that each time gets assigned a different price. This price then gets converted to a weight for the item. If you consolidate the items, RetailEdge will just think it is adding quantities for an item and just change quantities regardless of the price. This is no different from someone selling an item and then selling a discounted second item. RetailEdge would consolidate the two items and does not do anything complicated to add the second item into the screen and calculate a consolidated total that is the combination of the regular price item and discounted second item.

That being said it is a good suggestion and I will add it to the suggestion database. We are currently doing a review of new discount methods and this would probably be something to consider during this process.
