    Purging Inventory and other purges

    by CourtneyNHS » Mon Jun 22, 2009 7:21 pm

    Hi,

We have been using RE in our company since 2005 and no purges have ever been done to my knowledge. There seems to be lots of data causing our system to run slow and I want to try a purge. The Help menu says to back up all data before trying a purge. What is the best way to back up this extensive amount of data? And also would it be possible to do a purge in a training or demo mode before doing one live?

    Very Curious,
    Courtney

Hmm.... That is a loaded question. First thing that comes to mind is that you haven't been doing a backup since 2005? This is something you should be doing every night and taking these backups off site and storing them in a secure spot!

Anyway making a backup in RetailEdge is very simple. Choose Backup from the Tools|Backup menu item and save the file to either your computers hard disk or some removable media. This will contain all the RetailEdge files that you will need.

Getting the data into the demo database is a good idea and will allow you to test the purge before you do it on your real data. To get the backup into your demo database do the following in reverse:

    http://www.retailedge.com/phpBB/viewtop ... 771&p=2479

If you are seeing performance issues, this may or not be due to too much data. If you give me some more idea about what you are doing when you get these performance slow downs, I might be able to steer you to a different/better solution.

I believe backups are being done by the store managers every day. I work in the office and haven't done one myself. I was just wondering if the backup needed to be done on a specific computer.

The system seems to run slow when I am in the office updating costs or other inventory maintenence while the stores are open and making sales. There are other times that It slows that I haven't been able to figure out a reason for.

The info you have given me is very helpful I will experiment with the purges in demo mode and see if this helps clean up what I'm working on.

    Thank You,
    Courtney

The purge might help but I would try doing a verification and rebuild of the inventory tables and maybe an optimization of the tables before a purge. To do this, choose verify table from the Tools Menu and on the displayed form press Ctrl-Alt-R (rebuild). RetailEdge will allow you to choose which table to rebuild. Select all the Invent tables. You should do this when no one else is in the program.

It does not matter which computer you do a backup on. You can backup the data to a local computer if you want. If you have the RetailEdge dataserver installed locally, you could also try restoring the data into a local computer. This way you can determine if the slowness might be related to your network. In addition, if the slowness is sporadic, then you might want to look into other things that might be running on computer (main). One main culprit that we have seen slow things down is Google Desktop. Although this helps searching on your computer, it tries to search RetailEdge data every time there is a change to the database which is often. We have seen a number of customers remove this and found increased performance.
