I was under the impression that we could not use pin debit with PC Charge & retail edge. That to use debit we would have to switch to PPI or Mercury Payment systems. My credit card person tells me differently.

- you can use Pin-Debit with PC Charge and Retail Edge (there is a
module that we would need to load to the computer system)

- Retail Edge version 8.2 should be released in less than two weeks
and it has the capability to split a charge across several cards (up
to 5 different cards).

This requires a little bit of clarification.

Using PIN Debit with PCCharge is not supported. Not that it won't work, just that we won't support it. PINPads are devices that need to be "injected" with a key for the processor you are using. There are currently around 18 back end processors (FDMS, Global, Paymenttech, etc.) that could be used. You can see the list of PCCharge supported networks here.

We have been able to get PINPads with injections that work with the processing networks used by Payment Processing Inc (PPI) and Mercury Payment Systems (MPS). However we are not going to get PINPads in for all 18 networks, test them and then get new PINPads for each processor when changes are made. PINPads are notoriously difficult to setup and support (they can lose their injections, think they are being tampered with, etc.). In theory if the processor is on PCCharge's list and PCCharge is working with the PINPad then RetailEdge should work fine with it. However, in the field we have seen some work and other not work even within the same processing network and all things being the same.

So we have opted to not support PIN Debit other than for the processors we work directly with. If you are going to go with a processor that works with PCCharge and want PIN Debit, it is going to have to be at your risk. You might want to just make sure that you have some caviat that if it does not work, you won't be subject to all the fines that come with early termination of your contract.

Version 8.2 will support multiple credit cards. I don't think that it is limited to 5 different cards though. And just for clarification this is multiple credit cards for integrated credit card processing. So you will be able to process multiple visas (as you might have to do for Visa gift cards), or just to deal with people who have cards that have limits on them. This is currently being tested but should be out soon. It is a fairly complicated feature and the issue is not that you can process multiple credit cards, but more the issue that if you have the third or fourth card fail, you need to have all of the cards voided out properly so that balances don't remain on the customers cards. The one limitation to the multiple credit cards is that you can only process one Debit card as PIN Debit. If you have multiple debit cards, you will be able to process the others as credit as long as they have the Visa/MC logo on them. You just won't be able to get the reduced rate that you would get by having the customer enter their PIN. And as you know processing as PIN debit can save a significant amount on the transaction. So if you don't want to process them as credit, you can either split the sale into two transactions or do the first transaction as a deposit to an open order and then recall the open order and then take a payment on the open order for the second Debit card. This is the way someone would handle multiple credit cards now, but obviously this is a slower process and we are seeing many more Visa/MC gift cards and so we felt it was necessary to add this to the program.
