Barcode reader not recognizing some SKUs

    by Creek » Thu Jan 17, 2013 3:43 pm

We recently had to replace a POS station. This station is in the receiving department, so it's used mostly for entering inventory shipments. We installed RE on the brand new computer, plugged in the dongle, and nearly everything worked. On the old computer, the settings for the barcoad reader had been fine-tuned so that RE always located the correct item in the database. But since the new computer has been installed, RE frequently pulls up the wrong item. Also, after scanning a barcode, RE frequently loads the item very slowly. I'm thinking this may have something to do with leading zeroes that are used in the manufacturer's part number. But regardless of the cause, shouldn't the fine-tuned settings from the past have followed the dongle to the new computer? Any suggestions will be appreciated.

    A couple of questions.

    1. When you scan a barcode do you mean on the sales screen? Or are you doing inventory lookups?
    2. When you say it is looking up slowly, does the same item scan and lookup slowly on the main workstation or just this one?

When scanning a barcode, the scanner is the key. It usually will have nothing to do with the workstation. So I would suggest scanning the barcode into a text editor like Notepad and see what comes up. Then manually type or cut and paste that value into RetailEdge and see what happens.

Without knowing the answers to the questions above a few things might be going on.

    1. If you are scanning on the sales screen, the search by criteria might be set incorrectly. This is a setting that by default might not be set to what you had before.

    2. If it is scanning slowly, on this machine but not on the main machine then you might have a network issue. If it is scanning slowly on all machines, you might want to try rebuilding the indexes on the table. You can rebuild a table from the Tools menu in RetailEdge (Tools|Verify Tables|Ctrl-Alt-R).

Hope this helps. Let us know how it goes.
