After reading the help topic about discount rules and the coupon type discount I was able to create a coupon code that I can enter from the Coupon screen during a sale but is there a way to do this by scanning a barcode rather than typing a code?

Earlier posts regarding this topic seem out of date because the moderator's response was that Retail Edge doesn't do bar code creation.

You can do a couple of things to generate a barcode in RetailEdge that will work as a coupon code. You can create

1. a Package item with the name of the coupon code or
2. a customer with a customer ID matching the coupon code

Then print a customer label or package label for the customer or package. This will give you a label with a barcode that matches the coupon code you are using. The barcode on this label can then be used to scan in the coupon code at the time of sale. Or you can export the label to a PDF and then add it to a print or web add that you might be running that the customer would have to bring in to receive the discount.

Remember that RetailEdge can scan coupon codes right on the sales screen just like any other item in order to apply a discount rule to the sale. However, there can't be an item, SKU, UPC, Package that matches the code first and so you will need to delete the Package item first if you choose to go this way, otherwise the Package will be entered onto the sales screen when scanning the code instead of having the discount applied.
