Credit card terminals

The new smart terminals that are now coming out, I believe you have mentioned them from Mercury and another company, can they be mixed with older hardware? We have 2 registers, and the office. All can currently process credit cards. Register 1 is used 90% of the time, and Register 2 only when we are really busy. I don't want to invest a large sum of money for another terminal for register 2. If the terminals connect to the computer through the USB port is there a way to share it between the 2 registers? (They are side by side)

Good question. With the MagTek IPAD device that Mercury uses it does not show up as a device that can be shared, so I don't think this is something that you could do. However, these devices are relatively inexpensive (+/- $150?). But check with Mercury on this since they might be able to let you know if they have had any success sharing these devices.

The Genius device from Merchant Warehouse is an IP based to device. So this can be used by multiple workstations. But obviously you would need to manage this a little so that requests coming from one workstation don't override the requests coming from another workstation. This would probably not be an issue unless the secondary workstation was being used more frequently.

That being said RetailEdge still supports hand keying of credit card numbers into the program using these new integrations and with Merchant Warehouse integration you can also use a simple encrypted swiper. So depending on the number of swipes/transactions you are doing there are other affordable options.

Can you re post the contact information for a quote from Merchant Warehouse? Do they also have a virtual terminal like Mercury does? Do either support smart phone transactions?
