socket error 10060 and dirty tables

    by glowfish » Mon Jan 11, 2016 2:39 pm

    Hello
We had some issues with island not connecting and causing issues with POs open on both machines. We called in and they did a history...reverted the island back to an earlier date. Now they wont talk. Not sure what the issue is. It is pointed to the right IP address but when I look at the LAN info it is giving me a different IP address for the main register. Not sure what or if there is anything I can do without making a phone call.
    Errors:
phase 2 and 3 Socket error, one has log as well
    also phase 3 dirty table
    Thanks for your time,
    Vanessa Morse

A socket error is not necessarily a bad thing and can be temporary. We designed RetailEdge Island with this type of problem in mind. Unlike cloud based solutions where bad connections will cause you to not be able to access your data, all your data (as of the last synch) are on your Island computer. The socket errors you are seeing are in different phases of the process (phase 2 and 3) and so it tells me that you are getting disconnected during your synchronization and that your connection is breaking intermittently. RetailEdge will continue to try to connect until it completes the process.

We run RetailEdge Islands here for our business. I see socket errors on my system periodically too. Typically this is because I don't have a connection to the internet or more recently our VPN was not connecting properly. As soon as it connected properly everything continued.

I checked the logs for your last issue and you had two issues.

    1. You had done some cross editing. This is caused when the two computers are not synchronizing and you make a change on one computer and then on the Island computer to the same data. In its simplest form, this could be something like editing an inventory item on one and then the other. The last change wins in this instance. But can also be more problematic. So if you have some items in receiving on the Island and Update, then don't see that change on the main computer, and update again, you are going to double your receiving. RetailEdge does not know if you meant to add new items and receive or not.

    2. You had some data gaps on one of the computers. We see this sometimes where there are connection problems during critical synchronization operations or sometimes where there have been some table damage. You can fix these gaps if you see them (should be very very infrequent) by doing an Island Reset from the Tools | RetailEdge Island menu item. This will pull down all records for selected tables from a selected previous date from the master database and fill in the gaps if you have any.

If you continue to see socket errors, your best bet is to check the connection between the computers (Is Hamachi your VPN and are you seeing a blue relayed tunnel connection?). If you think everything is connecting fine, you can call technical support and we can always look into it further.

Thanks for the reply. The machines are just a few feet from each other so they are connected on the same network. Occasionally I take the island upstairs to work on things but that is the same network as well. If I do the island reset will I cause any problems?
    Thank you for your time.

Island resets should not hurt anything. But you really should not have to do them at all or under very rare circumstances. Usually they are done in response to seeing some piece of data not making it to the Island or in a multi-location business a secondary location. For instance you might not see a PO change coming across. Then you could run this on your purchase order files.

You should make us aware of any problems you have (not just synch problems too). Sometimes these problems can be more systemic issues that are outside of RetailEdge, but we can help you troubleshoot them and so things work smoothly as they should.
