    Mixing always-taxable and non-taxable items

Our use case is a food service cafe. We have to charge tax for dine-in orders and do not charge/collect tax for to-go orders. In this scenario, having our Tax Jurisdiction configured, we can default apply tax (most orders are dine-in) and use the Tax Exempt button for to-go orders. This works great!

Our problem is with soda. Soda has to be taxed whether it is dine-in or to-go. If we enter the price of soda, minus the tax, we don't collect tax on to-go orders. If we enter the price including tax, we double tax dine-in orders. I see that there is a check box to make an item non-taxable and could probably enter the price including tax and leave it non-taxable.

What we were wondering was is it possible to flag and item so that it cannot be tax exempt? I would very much like to maintain soda as a taxed item so that it is accounted for in our total sales tax. We will be relying on the sales tax reports to track all sales tax and would like to prevent having to separately track soda tax.

Instead of doing tax exempt you might want to try creating a separate tax jurisdiction (To Go) that has all items tax free, with an exemption for soda items. You can quickly change a tax jurisdiction, by creating a dummy customer (To Go Order), and add this customer to the Tax Free Sales. This customer would be setup to have a Tax Jurisdiction of To Go. On the sale, add the To Go Order customer, check "Ship this Sale" and the To Go jurisdiction will be applied.

    Hope this helps.
