Items on sale, automatic price reduction?

by Little Mountain » Sat Jun 02, 2007 12:38 pm

We have monthly sales, while it's tough to keep track of all the items I was wondering if there was a way to set the item so it shows up automatically at the discounted price.

IE: If it's normally $4.00 and it scans $4.00. When it's on sale for $3.40 I'd like it to be able to scan for $3.40 I'd rather not have to actually change the price because if I forgot at the end of the sale time, we lose money on it. When it's discounted it shows up pink and we notice it right off.

    Possible?

    Thanks

Time Discounting is something that is being evaluated for future releases. It is a pretty complicated issue and can run from something pretty simple to something that would require data structure changes etc. Your comment is helpful because it helps us understand what it is our customers are looking for.

RetailEdge currently has a number of ways to discount an item and maybe an explaination of the ways that it works will give you an idea of how you can do it within the current program.

RetailEdge has five price fields (Retail, Price 1 - Price 5). The normal selling price of an item is Price 1. Retail price is is used as the Was price for some label types so that you can show an "Our Price/Their Price" type of barcode label. It is also used to have discounting shown on a sales screen. The pink color on the sales screen showing a discount will be displayed when a Price 1 differs from the Retail price. So if you have an item with a Retail price of $2.00 and a Price 1 of $1.00, when you sell the item it will automatically be displayed with a 50% discount, in pink and, if you have the option turned on, will show the discount on a receipt.

If you want to discount items automatically on the sales screen, you can:

    1. Press the F6 button on the sales screen and do either a Any One Item in the Sales screen by a percentage amount, All Existing Items in the Sales screen by a percentage amount, the Complete Sale by a percentage amount, as a Package dollar value or, by a set Coupon amount.

    2. Set up an item to have different pricing levels. Some people have set them up for discounting at different times. For instance, if you sell something at 10% after holding it for a month, 20% after two months, etc, set up your pricing levels to have Level2 to to be a 10% discount, Level3 to be 20% etc. On the sales screen if you are discounting an item by a price level, then press Ctrl-Alt-Number, where number is the level you want to discount to (Level2 = Ctrl-Alt-2).

    3. So users create a Custom Customer called something like "Sale" that has a certain price level discount. So then when they have a sale, they enter that customer in the sales screen. Then all items that are entered into the sales screen get that discount. When the sale ends, just stop using that customer.

    Hope this helps.

I think this thread answered some of my questions. I was hoping RetailEdge would solve some of those sale issues I have with QuickBooks POS.

Looks like RetailEdge and QBPOS handle "sales" and "discount" pretty much the same.

Here are issues I would like a solution to:

    1) Buy X get Y free of equal or lesser value. Buy some number of an item and get some number free. Usually buy 1 get 1 free. But sometimes we do buy 4 get 1 free, buy 3 get 1 free, etc.

For example; we have some stuffed dog toys on clearance. They are on sale for buy 1 get 1 free. I want to just be able to scan both of them and have the system figure out which one has the higher price and put the lower priced one at 100% discount. If they are equal then just put the second one scanned in at 100% discount.

Another example; we have 4 varieties of a brand of dog food on sale. Buy 4 get 1 free. I want the customer to be able to just pickup 5 of any variety and get one of those for free.

One last example; similar to the previous example, but now with a manufacturer's discount. Buy 4 get 1 free. But now the 5 the customer gets all has to be the same SKU, even if there are other varieties in the matrix or department.

    2) 10% off (or what ever). I want an easy to use and manage solution for selecting a bunch of items and just putting them on sale for 10%.

I almost like QBPOS's Discount Manager. However, I can't just put something on sale for 10% using it. They only do X for Y pricing and you have to enter a hard-coded price for the sale. This makes it hard for creating a sale for a few dozen items.

I'm not really looking for Time Discounting, though that would be nice, one less thing to think about. I'm just looking for a robust, easy to use, Discount/Sale Manager. If we have a sale running for only a few hours during some morning (say the day after Thanksgiving) or for the month of June. I would be happy if there was just a way to make a sale inactive by checking a check box. This is similar to how the QBPOS Discount Manager works, but it's just way under powered for what we want to do.

Price levels are nice for some things, but I don't find them easy to use at all for putting items on sale. I don't like having to edit each item individually to apply a 10% discount. Then if you change the price, you have to remember to edit the price level again. 10% should be 10%, period.

RetailEdge does beat out QBPOS in that during the sale I can easily change the price level of just a single item instead of for the entire transaction. Though that could be made even easy by having a drop down for each item and even the entire transaction. QBPOS only lets you change the price level for the entire transaction. You can scan items in first, then change the level and choose to keep or change the current prices, but that's it. No individual price levels on items. A complete PITA.

Well I've rambled on too much. Still in search of that ideal POS solution.

    Kevin,

Thanks for the feedback. Sorry we can't help you with the current version of RetailEdge. We have considered discounting rules and your ideas are part of what we are considering for future releases.

Let us know if you have any other things that you would like to see in RetailEdge or any other questions you want answered.

I would also like to be able to select multiple items and discount them as I wish together (ie: one brand of dog food cans can be 12 different varieties.)
