    Differing Tax Rates

    by zid » Wed Jun 06, 2007 6:38 pm

So in New York, for clothes and shoes under $110 the tax rate is 3.875, and for everyithng else it is %7.875.

I had been referred to two different solutions. The first was one tax jursidiction with exceptions. I tried this, and it works great, but I was informed that it would print my end of quarter tax report all under one tax rate.

The other suggestion was two tax jurisdictions, with many exceptions, to prevent overlaps, etc. I was told this would correct the issue with reporting, however, I could not get this to work.

My 7.875 items come up properly, but the others come up with no tax at all.
    Any thoughts?

If you wish to set up two different tax jurisdictions in order to better run the Sales Tax Report
thereby breaking out the sales into the two jurisdictions, then do the following:
Set up two Tax Jurisdictions under Tools - Tax Jurisdictions.

Call one of them 3.875 and give it a Base Rate of 3.875.
Add a Stock Type Exception with a Stock Type of Stock and a Rate of 3.875.
Enable 2-Tier, Item Price =110.00, Rate on Amount... =0, and the Dot on Calculate on Total.

Call the other 7.875 and give it a Base Rate of 0.
Add a Stock Type Exception with a Stock Type of Stock and a Rate of 0.
Enable 2-Tier, Item Price =110.00, Rate on Amount... =7.875, and the Dot on Calculate on Total.

If you also sell Non-Stock Stock Type items that are Taxable, then you will also need to Add another
exception to both for Stock Type = Non Stock with the same settings as the corresponding Stock
    exception.

Also make sure that you go into Tools - Settings - Locations, Modify the Location, go to the Misc Tab, hit the Edit Sales Tax Jurisdictions button, and associate the correct Tax Jurisdictions with the location.

Specific to New York, where only the Clothes and the Shoes are the exceptions to the higher tax, you would use Department Exceptions as opposed to the Stock Type Exceptions.
