The most common problems with RetailEdge Island are related to the Island not being able to contact the main computer's data. Some of the most common reasons for connection problems are:
1.The network (LAN) is not working. If you are running on a LAN, make sure through Windows you can see the other computer that your Island is trying to connect to. One test is to choose Run from the Windows Start menu on the Island workstation and type in CMD. At the prompt, type in Ping and the IP of the main computer. If you aren't able to send data to the main computer, then RetailEdge Island will not be able to either.
2.The main computer's IP has changed. If you are running Island in a LAN, you should make sure that the IP of the main computer is static. This is a Windows network issue and outside of the scope of RetailEdge. However, to see the IP of the main computer, in RetailEdge choose Server Connection from the Tools | Settings menu item. On the displayed form, press the LAN Info button. This will display IP addresses of the main computer. The RetailEdge Island Workstation settings should be set to connect with any of these IP addresses (other than 127.0.0.1).
3.The VPN is not working. If you are connecting to the main computer through a VPN, check your VPN software or hardware. Make sure that the VPN is up and running. If you are using a program like Hamachi to setup your VPN, just click on the Hamachi icon in the Windows Taskbar at the bottom right hand side of the screen. This should tell you quickly whether your VPN is up and running.
4.Firewalls. Firewalls should always be turned on and are a necessary part of any computer system. However, RetailEdge Island might be blocked by the firewall and you need to tell your firewall to allow connections through the ports that RetailEdge uses. The RetailEdge Island uses port 12010 to communicate with the main store computer. Check your firewall and make sure that an exception for this port has been allowed. Also if you are specifying access from only specific computers or domains, make sure that the Island is a part of this domain and/or the IP of the Island computer has not changed.
5.Anti-Virus (AV) and Internet Security Software. AV and Internet Security Software is another necessary part of a computer network that might cause problems with RetailEdge Island. Rules must be setup in AV or Internet Security Software so that the software is not preventing the Island from talking to your main computer.
RetailEdge Island communicates with the main computer using the connections setup in Windows. So just like printing to a receipt or label printer, if your Windows printer driver can print to the printer, then RetailEdge can't either. If your network is not allowing access to the data on the main computer, then RetailEdge Island won't be able to access it either.
