You can take prepayments on orders and sales with RetailEdge layaways and open orders.  Open orders and layaways are transactions that have not been completed but payments have been made towards the transactions items.  Layaways and open orders are not treated as sales and inventory quantities for the items are not changed until total payment on the order/layaway has been received.  The inventory items availability quantity, however, is reduced at the time the open order/layaway is created.
