Setting Up Scale Items in Inventory

Once you have configured RetailEdge to work with a scale, you should setup your inventory items to automatically work with the scale.  When creating an item in inventory that will be using a scale, you will need to edit the item and identify it as an item to be weighed on the Weight,  Age, EBT sidebar option of the Inventory Editor.  You will find the following fields:

Tare Weight. This field is used to enter the Tare weight of the item. Tare is defined as an allowance made for the weight of the packaging in order to determine the net weight of goods. The tare weight is dependent on the units of the scale you are using and the tare weight should not exceed the minimum resolution (division) of the scale. For instance, if a scale reads 0 to 30 lbs with a division of 0.01 lbs, then the tare weight should be calculated as a multiple of the division. To calculate the proper tare weight, you should weigh the packaging on the scale being used.

Sales: Automatically Use Scale. Check this box to let RetailEdge know that this item needs to be weighed automatically using the scale set in your Workstation Settings.

Manually Weighed Item (e.g., bulk, pre-packaged, or pre-weighed)? Check this box to identify the item as an item that is pre-weighed using an external scale. When this item is scanned or entered on the Sales Screen, RetailEdge will automatically display a box to allow you to enter the weight of the item being sold.  RetailEdge will place this item on the Sales Screen and will append the description of the item with the price/unit weight and the text MAN WT identifying it as a manually weighted item. This feature can be used if you are not connected to a scale. RetailEdge does allow returns of weighed items. So if you are returning a weighed item, you should weigh the item normally and then return the item as you would return a non-weighed item.

Manual Weight Unit (Ex: lb). This field will be used to identify the units for the Manually Weighed items above.

Export Weight Value. This value is used to identify the weight of an item for exporting to a web site for shipping calculations. This is for fixed weight items and is not related to scale weights.

When setting up pricing on items on the Price tab, the following should be used:

Weighed Item Pricing. Pricing for a weighed item in inventory should be cost/unit weight. So an item that is $3.99/lb should be put into inventory with a Price of $3.99.

Split Pricing. RetailEdge also supports split pricing (i.e, 3/$1.00, 7 lbs/ $1.00). To setup an item to with split pricing, you should enter pricing as you normally would on the Price sidebar option of the Inventory Editor. Then enter the Split Pricing Qty in the listed field. The price entered should be the price for the quantity entered in the Split Pricing Qty. Split pricing can be for quantity or for weight, if the item is identified as an item to Automatically Use Scale on the Weight tab.
